·        THE BIG IDEA  (WHAT’S THIS ?)

We here at the library are Believing In Groton and feel a lot of enthusiasm and excitement as we plan for our eventual move to the restored Goodine House sometime in 2006.  The new facility will be a wonderful addition to the community with large children’s space, a young adult section, a reading and meeting room, a large area for the stacks, computer terminals, and much more. We will work hard at keeping everyone updated on progress.

·        FORMER LIBRARIANS AND LONG TIME VOLUNTEERS RECOGNIZED

As a way of marking the 50th anniversary of the library in the Community Building, the Trustees and Friends recognized five former librarians: Dorothy Main, Joan Hill, Mildred Hart, Elizabeth Patterson, and Molly Eastman, with a note of appreciation and a plant.  At the same time we thanked three of our long time volunteers:  Barbarann Bean, Marion Page, and Ruth Putnam.  When you see any of these great ladies, give them a big “thank you”!

·        SPEAKING OF BOOKS

Following are some recommendations for your reading pleasure!  All of these are available in our library.

  • Reading Lolita in Teheran by  Azar Nafisi
    (Susan Gordon)

  • The Five People You Meet in Heaven  by  Mitch Albom                (Barbarann Bean)

  • The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, by Carson McCullers                          (Nancy Spencer)

  • Dancing Alone Around the Room (poetry), by Billy Collins

(Debra Tinkham)

  • The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency (and the rest of the series), by Alexander McCall Smith  (Judy Chandler)

·        FRIENDS BELIEVE IN GROTON

The Friends of Groton Library join together to support, improve, and promote our library.  Annual membership dues are used for funding special programs and projects, and for covering expenses incurred by Friends in achieving their mission.  So far, we have coordinated the summer and Foliage Day Book Sales, and we purchased the welcome banner for the library.  Friends can also serve in volunteer roles as needed.

To join the Friends or for more information, stop by the Library or call Nancy Spencer (584-3717) or Judy Chandler (584-3050).

·        New CDs at the Library

The library has recently added compact discs (CDs) to its collection. There are six CDs of Christmas music, 18 CDs of music ranging from Stauss to Reba to Lenny Kravitz, and there are five new books-on-CD. These include Robert B. Parker’s Cold Service, Christiane Northrup’s Mother-Daughter Wisdom, Gene Wilder’s Kiss Me Like a Stranger, Steve Chandler’s 17 Lies that Are Holding You Back & the Truth That Will Set You Free, and Alice Hoffman’s The Ice Queen.

·        Library Story Hour

The library is now holding story hours for children at 10:30 AM on Thursdays. We would love to see our little group of participants grow. Call us at 584-3358 for more information. Also, if you would prefer that story time be held on Saturday mornings, please let us know.

·        In Appreciation

Our thanks to the Buckaroos of 302 Snowmobile Club for their donation of the book, Snowmobiling.  This is an informative high interest reading level book and it’s not just for kids.

On May 16, David O’Donnell-Leach led the discussion of First They Killed My Father, by Loung Ung.  This is an autobiographical account of war and political oppression in Cambodia in the 1970’s, and David’s knowledge of the history of Cambodia greatly enriched our understanding, and gave us new insights into the nature of political violence.

·        Why not adopt a shelf?

Would you like to adopt a shelf or a range of shelves at the library? All that is required is that you drop in a couple of times a month and make sure that your shelf is in order and that each book has been added to our automated catalog. Looking for more library work? As we start to look toward our move to the Goodine House, there is plenty of work for any one who would like to help. Once again, call 584-3358 for more information.
