Recycling & Trash

Groton partners with Ryegate in operating a Recycling Center in East Ryegate (directions below).  This is open every Saturday from 8:00 – 10:00 am.  There is no charge to drop off aluminum cans, metal cans, cardboard, box board, paper (newspaper, magazines, and office paper), plastic (#1 & 2 only), glass (no bulbs) and now plastic bags (#2 & 4 only).  There is also no charge to drop off fluorescent bulbs, oil and oil filters, wet cell (car) batteries, appliances and scrap metal of any kind.  Additional recyclable items accepted for which there is a charge include: tires, TVs and computer components.  Pete’s Rubbish Removal service collects bagged trash for a fee.  The Groton/Ryegate Center is operated by volunteers from Ryegate and Groton.

Household Hazardous Waste:  The Peacham Transfer Station will have a HHW collection in June as indicated in the above calendar.  HHW may also be taken to the NEKWMD office in Lyndonville by appointment June 1st to September 30th (802-626-3532 / 800-734-4602).

Bulky Waste: Bulky waste will be collected in April and October of this year as indicated in the above calendar.  Bulky waste includes old furniture and building waste (NOT pressure treated lumber). Donations are accepted to help defer the cost of this service.

Household Trash Bags: There are multiple places which take trash bags on Saturdays and Sundays for a charge per bag.  The closest is at a farm on the right on route 302 just east of Groton.   Pete’s Rubbish Removal service collects bagged trash at the Ryegate Recycling Center on Saturday mornings for a fee.

Groton and Ryegate are part of the Northeast Kingdom Waste Management District (NEKWMD) which operates a large processing facility in Lyndonville.  The material collected at the Ryegate center is periodically transported to Lyndonville where it is combined with material from 35 other towns of the Northeast Kingdom and sold.

For additional information on recycling, check the NEKWMD web site or contact NEKWMD at 802-626-3532 / 800-734-4602 / progmgr@nekwmd.org with any questions.  A Groton contact is Kitty Diggins at 584-3589.
